Preventative Dental Care

niu dentistry includes services to reduce the likelihood of contracting oral health conditions that can be more expensive to treat and uncomfortable to experience.  The following dental services typically fall under the preventive dentistry umbrella:

  1. Diagnostic services utilized to catch signs of oral problems early including:
  2. Oral evaluations (check-ups)
  3. X-rays
  4. Professional cleanings
  5. Fluoride treatments, especially for children
  6. Sealants, which are coverings that are applied to the top surfaces of permanent molars to prevent decay inside the grooves that naturally occur in these teeth
  7. Educational instruction provided by your dentist or dental hygienist, including:
  8. Techniques for proper brushing, flossing and use of other oral hygiene aids
  9. Nutritional and/or tobacco cessation counseling
  10. Space maintainers for children
  11. In special circumstances, preventive resin restorations or decay arresting medication applied to teeth, typically given to children at high risk for developing decay

Preventive dentistry services are labeled as such because they allow your dentist to monitor your oral health, promote healthy habits, prevent new disease through a variety of treatment services, and catch signs of oral health problems early. This gives you and your dentist sufficient time to identify, treat and reverse the issue.

Services such as fillings, root canal therapy, periodontal treatments, orthodontics, or tooth extractions are not considered preventive dentistry – they are instead geared towards remedying an existing problem and typically fall under the “umbrella” of basic or major procedures.

During a regular dental checkup, your dentist will perform an oral exam to check for signs of decay or gum disease, abnormal tooth wear, problems with alignment or mechanics, soft tissue diseases (such as oral cancers), and more. This exam is usually followed by a professional cleaning, along with sealant and fluoride application when appropriate, to ensure a clean, healthy, and protected mouth.

Preventive dentistry services should not be ignored. Seeing your dentist regularly and preventing oral health problems can help you maintain your overall health and wellness as you age, and save you time, money, and potential discomfort by avoiding serious dental disease.

Just how often should you visit the dentist? Make sure to keep up with oral exams and cleanings at regular intervals as determined by your dentist, or about once per year.

If you comming soon, make sure you know the warnings and dangers of the area before you go so that you can have fun and stay safe!
keep in mind a few common warnings that other tourists and locals alike know to be true. If you are looking for a good place to get a drink, it’s best to stay out of the local bars and keep to the more touristy ones. While it may be on obvious warning to keep an eye on your money, you need to make sure you know how much cash you are giving away Also, don’t get tricked into buying gold while here in Algodones, there isn’t any and you will likely be paying a lot of money for nothing.
You can get some amazing items for sale off the streets of Algodones, but if you are bringing children with you, it is best to be wary of where you take them in the area. There are some very age inappropriate toys being sold that can raise unnecessary questions from young children. Many people notice that on the street market of Algodones, the only children out are local children, who appear unfazed by all of it. Most tourists keep their children to other areas of the city.
If you are headed to Algodones to get dental work done, cheap medication, etc. and aren’t just touring, don’t stay past dark. Not only can some of the locals be a bit unfriendly but so can the police. Tourists have been reported being arrested for no reason at all, harassed, and even robbed by the police in this area. To make up for the hard economy in the area, you can be arrested for some pretty ridiculous things and fined a lot of money for them.
Los Algodones is the fun town, serving up a lively atmosphere where it seems like it’s a fiesta every day. Many businesses accept the American dollar, and English is almost universally spoken. Most tourist-oriented businesses are within an easy stroll of the border.

Visitors heading south of the border should follow common-sense safety tips:
1. Travel and shop with a group
2. Don’t wander out of the obvious “tourist areas”
3. Watch your alcohol intake
4. Follow all laws and remain alert to your surroundings
5. Before you enter the country, if your phone has higher international rates, decide if you want your roaming on or not
6. Wait times to cross back into the U.S. at Customs & Border Protection can vary. Visit early in the day, or relax and have a cerveza until the crowds thin!

-U.S. residents must declare purchases when re-entering the country, even from a day trip to Mexico. If you have not used your duty-free exemption in the past 30 days, you may bring back $800 worth of items for your personal or household use, including—if you are over 21—not more than 200 cigarettes and 100 non-Cuban cigars and one liter of alcohol.
